Lactation Support Services at Sweet Beginnings
Every baby WANTS to breastfeed. But sometimes there are hang-ups. You are not the only one! Please see this article: "My Baby Just Doesn't Get It" by Diane Wiessinger.
Know that you are not alone in your struggles! Find competent help and support. We’ll tell you all the things you are doing right, and then make suggestions - what to tweak to achieve the breastfeeding relationship you both deserve.
For a compassionate, gentle, and hands-off approach, come in for a consult with our Lactation Specialist Nurse (IBCLC candidate). At Sweet Beginnings, we have a full range of lactation support services:
Complimentary use of our baby scales to track your infant’s progress
Suggested weighing intervals are: 3 to 5 days after hospital discharge, 1 week of age, 2 weeks, 6 weeks or anytime you want the information, or to enjoy tracking your baby’s growth! You are always welcome at Sweet Beginnings.
Breastfeeding Checkup
You can meet with a Lactation Specialist Nurse for a “pep talk”, to have your breastfeeding questions answered, and have your latch visually assessed. Your baby will be weighed, and the nurse will provide feed-back to perfect your technique and your child’s milk transfer.
Call for an appointment, then bring your questions and concerns to get the reassurance you are needing.
Lactation Consult
If more in-depth help in needed, an appointment can be made for a longer consultation. This will include an exam of the mother and baby, and assistance with a feeding plan you can live with.
Common issues addressed during lactation consults are:
- Newborn with latch-on difficulty
- Breast or nipple pain
- Baby weight gain or milk supply concerns
The goals are: to improve comfort, optimize milk supply, and to have a calm, content and healthy mother and baby.
Many insurance companies reimburse for these services, and we will provide paperwork you can submit (you prepay, however).
Do I need a Baby Checkup, or a full Lactation Consult?
To determine your needs:
1) Will this visit require more than one half hour?
2) Will these issues require a hands-on exam of me or my baby?
3) Will I need a written report sent to my midwife or primary physician?
If you answer 'Yes' to any of these questions, you will need a full consult. If during your Baby Checkup, we find you will need a full consult, we may continue the visit. In this case, you will not pay for the baby checkup, but will be billed based on time for a full consult.
